Cherry on top delights

Role: Visual Designer

Summary

Cherry on Top Delights is a local, family-owned bakery whose website comes secondary to their regular operations. The goal of the website is to draw new customers to the physical location of the shop for cake consultation or classes. Unfortunately, The Cherry on Top Delights’ page today has severe usability and information architecture issues that could be addressed with a visual design overhaul to provide both an aesthetic appeal and represent the bakery’s true brand.

Branding

The brand of Cherry on Tops Delights is family-friendly and feminine. The small business believes strongly in young bakers and bringing playfulness into the kitchen through their variety of class and party offerings they host.

I tried to embody the playfulness of the font choices of the branding as well as the colors in the new design to still be authentic to their vision for their brand.

Heuristic Evaluation

Conducting a heuristic evaluation on the website was able to shine a light on the most critical usability concerns. Using the Chrome Extension UX Check, I collected the major findings and heuristics which could be solved with a restructuring of the website.

My findings reflected needs in consistency, flexibility, and aesthetics. Seen left are screenshots of the observations I noted, some including recommendations for resolution.

Final Mock Ups

Mobile First

Designing with a mobile-first philosophy, the single page application is much more friendly for the customer who is on-the-go and hears about their confectionary creations while out and about.

Usability

Making the site a single-page web app simplifies the page transition and reduces the need for animations that limit the customer’s ability to find information quickly.
